Taxi options in Malta, compared

There are three main ways to take a taxi in Malta: a white taxi, a ride app or, from 2027, a motorbike taxi. Here is how each one works, so you can choose the right one for your trip. We do not quote prices because they change daily.

White taxis

The white taxi is Malta's regulated, licensed taxi. White taxis usually wait at ranks, for example at the airport, the cruise terminal and in busy towns. Always check the fare or the meter before you set off, so there are no surprises at the end.

Ride apps: Bolt, eCabs and Uber

With a ride app you book a car from your phone. Bolt, eCabs and Uber are the names most people in Malta look for. The app sets the price, and it can move with demand, so it is worth checking two apps before you book.

Availability and payment options change over time, so check each app for what it currently offers where you are.

Bolt vs eCabs

Both are app-based. Bolt is an international platform; eCabs is a Maltese company. Neither is automatically better for every trip. Check each app for current coverage, prices and payment methods before you choose.

How much is a taxi in Malta?

It depends on the operator, the distance and the time of day. For a current number, open two apps and enter the same pickup and drop-off. That gives you a real comparison at that moment, which is more useful than any published average.

How to find the cheapest taxi in Malta

  • Compare two apps at the same moment, with the same pickup and drop-off.
  • Avoid peak times when demand pushes app prices up.
  • Check the fare before you confirm, whichever option you use.
